House Teams / Captains and Vice-Captains
At The Rydal Academy we have six house teams all named after British trees: Ash, Birch, Chestnut, Oak, Sycamore and Willow. We have a House Captain (Y6) and a House Vice Captain (Y5) for each house team. Our House captains and Vice House captains aim to take an active role in organising school events and provide opportunities for pupil voice.
Each year the children get to choose which charity the school supports. We have supported many such as: British Heart Foundation, Children in Need, Comic Relief, Children’s cancer charities. Each year the children tell the House Captains and House Vice Captains their ideas for a charity and then we hold a vote. The charity with the most votes wins.

Pupil Voice
Pupils are given the opportunity to express their views and make positive contributions towards the school. Through termly pupil voice meetings and assemblies, we teach the children skills they need to be able to make decisions which impact positively upon our school.
All children have a role as a Consultant for one of our pupil voice groups covering everything, we do in school including curriculum subjects, pupil groups and broader provision.
The aim of our pupil voice groups is that children will have the knowledge and skills to be able to make appropriate decisions and express their opinions respectfully. The children experience democratic votes on certain decisions and show mutual respect and tolerance through this. It will provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact upon them.
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
In our school we aim to create a climate where all members of the school community feel treated with respect and to create a safe, nurturing, and positive environment for all. We feel it is important for our anti-bullying message is not only adult led.
Mental Health Champions
At The Rydal Academy we see Mental Health as very important. We have a staff member trained as a Senior Mental Health Lead and children trained as Mental Health Champions who learn about their own mental health and how to help others.
Other Responsibilities
We also have a number of additional roles in school for identified children to demonstrate their TRA Values and support the school community (Breakfast Club Helpers, Youth Club Helpers, Playground Leaders, Sports Assistants, Club Assistants) or for all children to have the opportunity to make a positive contribution toward the school environment (Lunch Assistants, Line Leaders, Corridor Monitors, Subject Experts, Lesson Technicians, Peer Mentors)
