PSHRE – Personal, social, health and relationships education
At the Rydal Academy we believe that a high-quality PSHRE education should give children the knowledge and skills to embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life. This will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. We want all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain.
Our PSHRE curriculum deepens children’s understanding through a variety of methods, including individual and group work, discussions, role play, and practical activities. It follows the SCARF program of study.
The learning strands presented in the lesson plans form part of a spiraling curriculum, where children continuously build on new knowledge, skills, and concepts, while also revisiting and reinforcing previously learned material.
Teaching provides pupils with essential knowledge on topics such as citizenship, economic wellbeing, safety, relationships, health and wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, British values and SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development).
The PSHRE curriculum is also complemented through assemblies and the work of outside agencies such as the school nurse and NSPCC. The curriculum is structured as follows:
- Autumn 1: Me and my relationships
- Autumn 2: Valuing difference
- Spring 1: Keeping safe
- Spring 2: Rights and respect
- Summer1: Being my best
- Summer 2: Growing and changing
Year 1 to 6
