British Values at Rydal

Embracing British Values at Rydal

At The Rydal Academy, we celebrate the diversity of our pupils, families, and the wider school community. Through all aspects of school life, we actively promote a core set of values that underpin what it means to be a responsible citizen in modern Britain.

We believe that embedding these values supports our pupils in becoming respectful, confident, and thoughtful individuals. By helping children to understand and embrace these principles, we foster their spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental, and physical development. In doing so, we also equip them with the knowledge and resilience needed to make positive choices.

The British Values we promote are:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

These values are central to our school ethos.  They are woven throughout all aspects of school life, ensuring that pupils encounter and experience them in meaningful, age-appropriate ways every day.

British Values are taught explicitly through PSHRE lessons, where pupils explore their meaning in a range of contexts. In addition, children in Years 1–6 take part in a dedicated lesson at the start of each term, focusing on a different British Value across the academic year.

We also provide pupils with a range of leadership roles and opportunities to make positive contributions to school life, such as serving as House Captains, taking on pupil ambassador roles, and supporting peers through a variety of initiatives. Through these experiences, pupils learn to express their views, take responsibility, and actively contribute to a democratic and respectful school community.
